Last weekend, roughly 40 people were in attendance as the St. Marys Swedish Kubb League (SMSKL) held their “Kubb Welcoming Day”. Kubb (rhymes with “tube”) is a lawn game where the object is to knock over wooden blocks, known as kubbs, by throwing wooden batons at them. The ancient Viking game has gained popularity in St. Marys in the last year through the efforts of local Kubb ambassador Mike Bender.
Shane Pfaff looks to make a successful toss in Swedish Kubb as Jeff Doupe, Troy Carter, Clive Slade and Tim Barton look on. Moments later, Carter would deliver the winning throw for their team by knocking down the king kubb at the centre of the pitch. (Photos by Stewart Grant)
