Change to policing approved

Stratford takes over Jan 1, 2018

The OPP are out and Stratford Police Service is in. The Ontario Civilian Police Commission (OCPC) told the Town that their request to change police services has been approved. The Commission noted in their ruling that St. Marys provided a highly detailed proposal in support of the request. One contentious issue noted by the Commission was that St. Marys and Stratford are not “geographically contiguous” but noted that the OPP detachment is 20.1 kms away while the Stratford detachment is 20.3 kms but to compensate Stratford would have a full time officer in St. Marys at all times while the OPP did not do so. They also noted that Council and the public supported the change. The contract with the OPP is set to expire on December 31st so it is expected that Stratford will assume duties on January 1st 2018. The full details of the change will be made at the Council meeting on April 25th at which time the final agreement between St. Marys and Stratford should be completed.
