FORE! Five, Six, Seven….

St. Marys’ golf options are plentiful

By Stewart Grant

Friends of mine who live in Toronto have difficulty finding time to play golf. Between the ridiculous big-city traffic and the courses packed with people, getting out for a round of golf is an all-day affair.

In contrast, avid golfers in the St. Marys area are blessed with a wide range of high-quality golf courses all within a short drive. Moreover, they are all reasonably-priced and tee times are easily found.

The following page includes advertisements from several local courses who sponsored our “Golf 2017” feature in the Independent. Please take a good look through their offerings and pay a visit to these courses this spring and summer.

At Science Hill Country Club, Shelley Reid (GM) and her brother Jason McCann (Course Superintendent) are taking on greater responsibilities at the family-owned course as their parents Jim & Nan McCann are lowering their workloads after roughly 30 years in the business. Science Hill’s clubhouse has a great new look and the course itself is always in fantastic condition including its unique and challenging punchbowl greens. The team at Science Hill are excited about growing this year’s Thursday Men’s League and are also promoting junior golf by inviting kids 14 years of age and under to play for free, with an adult.

River Valley Golf & Country Club, nestled along the banks of the Thames River just west of town, has been owned by the Tkaczuk family since they built the course back in the 1980s.  River Valley has an inviting atmosphere and its scenic landscape along the river is a haven not only for golfers but also wildlife such as bald eagles, deer, rabbits and turtles. Their Tuesday Mixed League, Wednesday Ladies League and Thursday Men’s League attract many who appreciate the courses relaxed atmosphere and affordable rates.

GolfNorth presents a unique membership opportunity to area golfers, with their multi-course membership option providing the chance to play local courses such as The Fox Golf & Country Club, Cobble Hills Golf Club, and Rebel Creek Golf & Country Club along with many other great courses across Ontario (including the critically-acclaimed Grey Silo Golf Club in Waterloo. All of these courses are within a short drive of St. Marys and are available for green-fee play throughout the season.

Ironwood Golf Club is a beautifully-maintained and enjoyable course less than 30 minutes away in Exeter. Ironwood’s Men’s League runs on Tuesdays (a different day than the St. Marys courses), thus giving another great option for social golfers to fill their week. Ironwood also has thriving programs for ladies, seniors and juniors.

Beyond the seven courses mentioned above, other area courses like St. Marys Golf & Country Club, Mitchell Golf Club, Stratford Country Club and Stratford Municipal Golf Course bring our local choices easily into the double-digits.

There’s no doubt that we are certainly fortunate to have so many unique, well-maintained golf course options available in close proximity.
