A big crowd is expected tonight to cheer on the Lincolns as playoff hockey returns to St. Marys. The puck drop is scheduled for 7:30 pm when the Lincolns take on the London Nationals for Game 2 of their first-round GOJHL series. London took the game one of the series on Wednesday night with a 6-3 win in a penalty-filled affair.
It was an exciting and hectic end to the regular season for St. Marys: a finish that saw the Lincolns complete a major comeback in the final game against St. Thomas to avoid facing the high-powered Chatham Maroons in the first round.
In the battle for sixth-place versus St. Thomas, the Stars went into the third period up 5-2 before St. Marys stormed back by scoring three unanswered goals to force overtime. The tying goal, off the stick of Clayton Lewis, came with the Lincolns’ goalie pulled and just 28 seconds remaining on the clock. As the game continued into overtime and then double-overtime, St. Thomas then pulled their goalie in a last-ditch effort to win the game and move ahead of St. Marys. However the game ended in a tie and the Lincolns held onto sixth place ahead of St. Thomas, thus pitting St. Marys against London in the first round while St. Thomas would face Chatham.
In Wednesday’s opening playoff game against London, the Nationals scored three times in the third period to win the game 6-3. Tanner Hertel and Alessio Luciani both put up a goal and an assist for the Lincs in the loss. St. Marys got into deep penalty trouble during the game and all three third-period goals were on the penalty kill.
St. Marys will be looking to equalize the series tonight at 7:30 pm when the series continues.
