Town reminds snowmobilers to observe local by-law and provincial regulations

Winter is here and so is snowmobile season. The Town is reminding snowmobile drivers to stay safe and obey the law.

By-Law Number 6 of 1995 regulates the operation of snow vehicles, including snowmobiles, within the Town of St. Marys. According to the by-law, snowmobilers should not drive along sidewalks or boulevards, within St. Marys Cemetery boundaries or on Town parklands. Driving a snowmobile after 11:00 p.m. and before 7:00 a.m. is also prohibited. Drivers who fail to observe the Town by-law may be subject to fines of up to $300 per offence. The full by-law is available on the Town’s website.

Snowmobiling is also regulated by the Ontario Ministry of Transportation. In Ontario, everyone who drives a snowmobile must be at least age 12, have appropriate licenses and insurance and register their vehicle with the Ministry of Transportation. A complete list of provincial requirements, as well as safety tips can be found at mto.gov.on.ca/english/safety/snowmobile-safety.shtml.
