It was with profound sadness that we learned yesterday that our colleague Dan Rankin had passed, as a result of a car accident on Tuesday, at the age of 29. Dan was an integral member of the St. Marys Independent in his role as Editor of the paper. With a vast knowledge on many subjects, Dan wrote every week about world news, agriculture, businesses and of course sports, among other things. He was a dedicated reporter who covered and wrote articles in a fair and unbiased manner. He was proud of the work he did and put a great amount of research into what he was writing. But his work at the Independent was only part of his life. He was an integral part of the community, and was a part of the sports and entertainment scene in town. He was an active member of the Community Players and had starring roles in some of their productions. As far as sports was concerned perhaps his only flaw was that he was a Rangers fan which we used to rib him about, but he did not care and was sure to tell us when his team won. And above all, he was very proud of his family, not only his mom and dad, but his siblings and their children. Dan was way too young to leave us and we are sure that he would be happy to know that he is helping others by organ donations. He helped people in life and now is helping others in death. We would like to offer our condolences to his family and to his partner Meagan MacArthur on his untimely death.
We will not forget you Dan. Stewart, June, Tyler and Frank.
