Our thoughts are with the Rankin family at this time. In this last column of the year, we look back on some highlights and send our best wishes to everyone who’s helped make 2016 a banner year for the CBHFM. For our Director of Operations, 2016 has been notable for the quality and quantity of support for the Hall of Fame. Induction Weekend is always a highlight but 2016 stands out for a group of Inductees representing all aspects of baseball: players Pat Hentgen and Dennis Martinez, executive Howard Starkman, scout Wayne Norton, broadcaster Tony Kubek and pioneer William Shuttleworth. The increased museum attendance and events on the site, a significant uptick in attendance during Induction weekend and more annual memberships, including several in the Hometown St. Marys category, signal that we are moving in the right direction. Special thanks to our Grand Slam members BaAM Productions, Perry Giannias, Margaret King and Homerun members Lee Beam, William Gleed, Lynn Hainer, Lift Depot LTD, David Morneau, Jeffrey Royer, Liam Scott and John Starzynski, to our major sponsors the TD Bank, Labatts, DFK Equipment Sales, St. Marys Cement Company, Toronto Blue Jays, Town of St. Marys and Miller Thomson lawyers and to our Board of Directors. Sincere appreciation to The Independent for giving us publication space for this column and to Dan Rankin for stellar reporting of our events and activities throughout the year. Thank you to our generous local sponsors: Action Health Care, All Roads Dodge Chrysler Jeep Ram, Andemar Dust & Ice Control, Aubretia Internet, Biliztik Sports, Canadian Cart Sales, Cascade Cleaners, Damens Restaurant, DFK Equipment Sales, Dowler Karn, Downtown GMC Buick Pontiac, Dunny’s Source for Sports, Finnie Distributing Inc., Forman Electric, Frayne Custom Cabinets, Future Three Investments, Glen Shackleton, Graham Energy, Hearn’s Ice Cream, Hitching Post, Hubbard Pharmacy, Jackson’s Pharmacy, the Tudor Family, The Journal Argus, Kingsway Lodge, Little Caesar’s Pizza, Little Red’s Pub & Eatery, Lyric Flowers, Maple Leaf Foods, MCC Contractors, McDonald’s Independent, Norampac, Overholt Renos, Re-Max a-b Realty Ltd, River Valley Golf & Country Club & Winter Tube Slide, Royal Bank, RVS Draperies, Sam’s Home Hardware, Stacey’s Pizza, St. Marys Cement Company, St. Marys Ford, St. Marys Golf & Country Club, St. Marys Independent, St. Marys Insurance Group, St. Marys Lugger Service, St. Marys Kinsmen Club, St. Marys Kinette Club, St. Marys Minor Ball, St. Marys Rotary Club, St. Marys Slopitch, St. Marys Tourism, St. Marys Veterinary Clinic, Stone Willow Inn, Stonetown Physiotherapy, Stonetown Supply, Subway, Sunset Diner, TD Canada Trust, The Flower Shop & More, The Source, Tim Hortons, Town of St. Marys, Village Craft & Candle, Waghorn Sipos & Poulton LLP, Westover Inn, Wildstone Restaurant, Wildwood Care Centre. We’re exceedingly grateful as well to The Rotary Club for ongoing support and we wouldn’t be where we are without our donors. Among other things, your financial contributions have funded time for researching, documenting and preserving key Canadian baseball moments, enabling us to collect and protect unique artifacts, and financed school visits to the museum. They also help to fuel our outreach program so that we can share Canadian baseball experiences with people across the country. Thank you current and past Inductees, plus recently retired players, for coming to St. Marys to support the Hall of Fame: Fergie Jenkins, Tony Fernandez, Duane Ward, Pat Hentgen, Dennis Martinez, Darrin Fletcher, Steve Rogers, Paul Beeston, Pat Gillick, Doug Melvin, Howard Starkman, Wayne Norton, Paul Quantrill, Jeff Francis, Paul Spoljaric, John Upham, Chris Robinson, Billy Atkinson, Brock Kjeldgaard, Ashley Stephenson, Don McDougall, Jim McKean, Murray Cook, John Haar, Greg Hamilton, Allan Simpson, Larry Landreth, Greg O’Halloran, Gord Ash, Jim Fanning’s family, plus Blue Jays GM Ross Atkins, Baseball Canada President Ray Carter and President of the National Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, Jeff Idelson. Thank you to our staff, Jocelyne Gall, Doug Goudy, Rod Betteridge, Blake Mossey, Evan Thomson, Wayne Murray, Jensen Dundas, Danielle Swan and Sarah Hutchings and to the coaches, players, families and friends who made the diamonds a beehive of activity all summer. A tip of the hat to Andrew North and Brian Marshall, organizers of the first Canadian Baseball History Conference, which brought more than 60 baseball-minded individuals to the Town of St Marys in November. We hope to have a role in making this an annual event. Last but certainly not least, heartfelt thanks to the dedicated volunteers who come back year after year to help us with tours of the Museum, cataloguing, press releases, fund-raisers, Induction Weekend, ticket selling, bingos and all the other events we run to make the Hall of Fame successful. Special thanks to Nelda Oliver for faithfully photographing people and events for our archives, as well as helping inside and outside the Museum, and to Kevin Glew, who gives freely of his time to ensure that our press releases are top-notch. THANK YOU!!
