One Officer Wijnands’ career in policing ends as another’s is just beginning

On Wednesday, Kees Wijnands, Media Relations Officer for the Perth County OPP detachment, retired after 30 years of service. Wijnands had been working in Perth County for 19 years, before which he served in Kapuskasing and Pembroke in Northern Ontario.

For his last shift, he was working with another Officer Wijnands, his son Ian, who has been serving in West Perth, in Mitchell, since June. Ian said he has been called to St. Marys as a part of his duties on patrol and calls for service about a dozen times since he started.

The elder Wijnands took over as Media Relations Officer from Lincolns General Manager Glen Childerley about seven-and-a-half years ago.

Paying the Independent office a visit on Wednesday, Kees said he has plans to visit friends at a cottage in Peterborough over Christmas. Next year, back home in Sebringville, he said he’ll finally have time to tackle a list of household projects. Ian, who originally worked as a diesel mechanic in Stratford before following his father into policing, also resides in Sebringville.

Kees has planned a retirement open house at the Sebringville Community Centre on Jan. 27, 2017 for anyone interested in coming out, sharing some memories and wishing him well.
