For the last seven years, Dr. Darren VanDam, who lives in London and has a practice in Ilderton, has been taking six shifts per month at St. Marys Memorial Hospital, generally working Thursday through Sunday every other weekend in the Emergency Department. Due to increasing teaching commitments at the UWO medical school where Dr. VanDam also works, Saturday marks his last shift here in St. Marys. E.R. nurse Heather Brock credited Dr. VanDam for working in St. Marys during several uncertain years when it looked like St. Marys Memorial might have to shut its doors for the summer. “This town should at least know what he has done for them, helping us keep open when times were rough,” she said.
