Beginning Thursday evening May 12 at 6:30 pm, the Parks Lawn Bowling Club will be hosting a series of open houses this month at the club’s grounds located next to Milt Dunnell Field in St. Marys, to show any potential bowlers what the leisurely sport has to offer.
The Parks Lawn Bowling Club currently has around 30 members ranging in age from 8 to almost 90, said executive member Larry McLellan. “There’s quite a variation in age because it’s a sport anybody can do,” he said.
Besides the open house next Thursday, one is also scheduled next Sunday afternoon, May 15 at 1:30 pm, and on Thursday May 19 at 6:30 pm.
A $90 membership fee offers access to the club’s tournaments, of which eight are currently scheduled, beginning Saturday, May 14 and running through until October.
The first such event, the club’s Spring Classic, begins next Saturday at 9:30 am. Sponsored by Kingsway Lodge, Action Health Care and Coldwell Banker, there’s a $100 entry fee for the Open Fours tournament. First prize is $500. In the event of a rain out, an alternate date has been set as May 21.
A Men’s Pairs tournament sponsored by Cathie Szmon is also scheduled for later this month on May 25.
